  64. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  67. To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following 
  68. minimum requirements:
  69.  
  70. - A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  71. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  72.   8 MB of RAM minimum, 16 MB with Active Desktop
  73. á For Microsoft Windows NT:
  74.   16 MB of RAM minimum, 24 MB with Active Desktop
  75. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  76.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  77. - 40 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  78. - Mouse
  79. - Modem
  80. - CD-ROM

  83. SETUP
  84. =====

  86. - Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should make sure that no
  87.   scheduled tasks are running, because they might interfere with the Setup 
  88.   process.
  89.  
  90. - CAUTION: Do not install any previous version of Internet Explorer over 
  91.   Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install an earlier version of Internet 
  92.   Explorer, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
  93.  
  94. - If you have been using Platform Preview 2 release of Internet Explorer 
  95.   4.0, you should uninstall that version before installing the final version. 
  96.   During the uninstall process, you will be prompted to save your Outlook 
  97.   Express preferences; they will be used to set up Outlook Express when you 
  98.   install Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  99.  
  100. - It is recommended that you download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  101.   directory that does not contain any other files and that will not 
  102.   be used for any other purpose. If for some reason you want to 
  103.   uninstall the Setup files, the download directory will be removed. 
  104.   For information about removing the Setup files, see "Installing Internet 
  105.   Explorer 4.0."

  107. Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  108. --------------------------------
  109. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download the 
  110. installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are copied to 
  111. your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more quickly if you need 
  112. to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can remove the Setup 
  113. directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control 
  114. Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup Files.
  115.  
  116. You cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run it from a 
  117. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  118. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  119. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  120. UNC path.
  121.  
  122. If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end 
  123. of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually. 
  124.  
  125. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
  126. -------------------------------------------
  127. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  128. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  129. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  130. after installing or uninstalling.
  131.  
  132. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  133. 4.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  134.  
  135. If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  136. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  137. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  138. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  139.  
  140. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  141. you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify when prompted 
  142. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  143. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  144. the registry:
  145.  
  146. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  147. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dl
  148. 3. Click OK.
  149.  
  150. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  151. -------------------------------------------------------------
  152. If your computer is set up to dual boot between two operating 
  153. systems, you must install multiple instances of Internet Explorer 
  154. 4.0 in a separate directory for each operating system. For example, 
  155. if you are running Windows 95 and Windows NT, you might want to 
  156. install Internet Explorer 4.0 in C:\IE95 for Windows 95 and in C:\IENT 
  157. for Windows NT. Do not try to use the same installation of Internet 
  158. Explorer with two operating systems. If you later uninstall Internet 
  159. Explorer 4.0, one of your operating systems may be left unbootable if 
  160. you don't follow these steps.

  162. Note also that if you dual boot between two operating systems 
  163. that are configured to share a Program Files folder, and you 
  164. uninstall an add-on component from one of your Internet Explorer 
  165. 4.0 installations, it will be removed from both of them. This is 
  166. because the add-on files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  167.  
  168. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0
  169. ----------------------------------
  170. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the 
  171. following steps:
  172.  
  173. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  174. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  175. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  176.  
  177. Cannot Use Registry or ERD Files Created Before 
  178.   Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  179. -----------------------------------------------
  180. If you install Internet Explorer 4.0 and then restore a Windows 95 
  181. registry that was created before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  182. or use a Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that was created 
  183. before you installed Internet Explorer 4.0, you may be unable to 
  184. start Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  185.  
  186. To resolve this problem, use the Ieremove.exe tool to remove Internet 
  187. Explorer 4.0. For information about how to do so, open the Microsoft 
  188. Knowledge Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb/default.asp, and then
